Sky Lantern, winner of the 1000 Guineas, put up a stunning performance to win the Coronation Stakes on Friday.
"Sky Lantern had drawn four lengths clear by the line, with French-trained outsider Kenhope nabbing second spot from Just The Judge close home."
Taken back to virtually last place by Champion Jockey Richard Hughes from a wide draw, 9/2 joint-favourite Sky Lantern was still towards the rear as the field, headed by her fellow market-leader Big Break, turned for home.
Hughes soon made his move, tracking Jamie Spencer on Irish 1000 Guineas winner Just The Judge before sweeping into the lead a furlong out. She had drawn four lengths clear by the line, with French-trained outsider Kenhope nabbing second spot from Just The Judge close home. Big Break tired and ultimately finished seventh of the 17 runners.
The victory was an especially welcome one for Hughes, who had been expected to enjoy a fine week at Royal Ascot but had been without a winner prior to Sky Lantern after coming unstuck on a number of high-profile mounts. Perhaps more significantly, it marks Sky Lantern out as a filly who'll prove a force to be reckoned with even once stepping out of her own age group.
