Hugo Palmer sends his 2018 Derby hopeful The Revenant for a spin at Epsom on Sunday and the trainer gives us his exclusive verdict here...
"He's a lovely colt who I have very high hopes for."
The Revenant has a Derby pedigree, being by Dubawi out of Hazel Lavery, who won the St Simon Stakes over a mile-and-a-half, and he is already entered for Epsom next summer. He has the ability to match his breeding too, and was impressive enough on his debut at Haydock to get a 33/1 quote for the Derby.
He's a lovely colt who I have very high hopes for, but I don't think he's quite ready to tackle graded company without more experience, and I've chosen this conditions race as he gets a 3lb penalty for winning a class 4 rather than double that in a novice event, although that's also the case for a few other winners here. He is well balanced and handled soft ground well on debut, although I'd prefer not to see a downpour, for all it doesn't tend to get too deep at Epsom.
I hope he will handle the track, but you don't know for sure until you try, and how he copes will help to inform us as to whether Epsom will be on or off his agenda next June.
