Consistency counts for plenty at the lower levels of US racing, where few horses manage to string together a decent number of solid efforts, and Fitzhugh Flash (Will Rogers Down, 21:18 BST) rates highly on this score, his last four runs all producing Timeform form-based ratings around 70 and top-three finishes. More of the same should see him highly competitive in an ordinary claimer at a course on which he has won. Fitzhugh Flash also seems more versatile in terms of run style than possibly his main rival on form, Southern Blast, who ran poorly here last time. Odds of 3.5 or longer would look appealing about the selection.
The opener at Mountaineer (00:00 BST) looks something of a two-horse race on paper, with John's Mariah and Bloody Smart holding a class break on their rivals. That's a class break if they are at their best, which is more of a doubt for John's Mariah than for Bloody Smart. The former deteriorated last year, something which a cheap win in a claimer in November could not disguise, and has not been seen out this one; the latter is a regular at this track and posted two good efforts here in March before a disappointing third last time. There are also no doubts about Bloody Smart on her return to turf, as she was a good second on it here last summer. Best foot forward should see Bloody Smart get back into the winner's enclosure.
Race 6 at Mountaineer (01:55 BST) is a maiden claimer which brings together several different strands of form: Ranger Annie has won at Turfway Park and been second here; Red Hot Bull comes here from Tampa, where she was a beaten favourite last time; and Bless Jessica R ships in from Oaklawn, where she ran second recently. On Timeform form-based ratings, the last-named should be quite a bit shorter than the other two (and a quartet of others), as the pair she split last time have run good seconds in better company than this since. The Morning Line suggests that won't necessarily be the case, so a bet on her makes appeal.
