Bets of the Day: All eyes will be on Sire De Grugy at Exeter

It'll be great to see that white blaze in front again.
It'll be great to see that white blaze in front again.

Alan didn't have much success with the national hunt card at Kempton yesterday but is looking to put that right with two selections from Exeter today...

"Providing the nine-year-old chestnut isn't suffering any bad memories of that fall at Aintree he could be tough to beat off a mark of 167"

14:20 Exeter - Sire De Grugy @ 5/2

14:20 Exeter - Sire De Grugy @ 4.03/1

It was April when we last seen Sire De Grugy on a racecourse, when he uncharacteristically fell at Aintree in the two and a half mile Melling Chase, but Gary Moore has dropped the 2014 Queen Mother Champion Chase winner back in trip to his preferred distance in this event.

He is reported to be in good form at home and Moore has made no secret that his initial target is to retain his Tingle Creek crown that he won in 2013. Providing the nine-year-old chestnut isn't suffering any bad memories of that fall at Aintree he could be tough to beat off a mark of 167, each of his last six wins have been off a higher mark than this.

He certainly won't have his own way in this race today though, champion trainer Paul Nichols runs last season's talented novice Vibrato Valtat and last year's winner God's Own will be looking to make it back-to-back wins for Tom George.

15:50 Exeter - Monbeg Gold @ 5/2 Sportsbook

Jonjo O'Neill's handicap debutant Monbeg Gold looks a strong contender after finishing second in a maiden hurdle at Uttoxeter last time out. While he has failed to get his head in front after three starts under rules he did win an Irish three mile point in February and has improved on each of his starts since then.

Today the four-year-old runs over two mile seven furlongs after staying on, on both his maiden runs, the increase in distance shouldn't be a problem. I read a stable tour from Jackdaws Castle recently and the comment alongside Monbeg Gold read "We like him and, hopefully, he will be one of our brightest prospects." - high praise indeed when you consider the talent within the yard.
