Alan Thompson returns with his two best bets from Tuesday's action at Southwell and Ayr, both of whom were only narrowly defeated last time out...
"The seven-year-old gelding attracted plenty of money on debut for this yard at Newton Abbot last week."
Hidden Glen can repay connections today
Last time out Hidden Glen was running for the first time for trainer Dr Richard Newland after previously being with Ben Pauling and the seven-year-old gelding attracted plenty of money on debut for this yard at Newton Abbot last week. Unfortunately for his supporters, he just found one too good on the day after trading as low as [1.13] in running.
He has been lightly raced since winning a novice hurdle at Kempton in October 2018 but he has clearly been showing something at home. I don't recall seeing too many horses sent off as favourite after pulling up in their previous three starts. Sam Twiston-Davies is in the plate today and he has a great strike rate when riding for Dr Newland, racing off the same mark as he did at Newton Abbot, which is 10lbs less than his last chase start, I think connections may well get some of their money back today.
My Boy Lewis can get his second career win at Ayr
Another that was just beaten last time out is My Boy Lewis, Roger Fell's four-year-old was just headed on the line at Redcar after being slowly away he ran on well over a mile to take it up towards the finish, trading at [1.1] in running but just got caught. He has only gone up 2lbs for that effort and dropping back to seven furlongs today could be to his advantage especially if Callum Rodriguez can get him out the stalls on terms.
It's a competitive Class 6 event and there are plenty of dangers in the field, House Deposit is the worthy favourite and in good form with a win and second on his last two starts. Poet's Magic may well have been even closer last time with a clear passage, managing to finish third that day was creditable but finishing second on two of his three starts this season, I just think My Boy Lewis deserves some compensation for his near misses and I can see him notching up a second career success today.
