Day one of Glorious Goodwood and Alan Thompson has two selections to get the festival started...

Battleground can back up his Chesham victory today

Back Battleground @ 11/8 Goodwood 14:15

Despite finishing a never-nearer fifth on his racecourse debut at Naas in early June, Battleground was a well supported favourite for the Chesham Stakes 10 days later, and that confidence was justified at Royal Ascot with an emphatic victory. There is surely more to come from this well bred two-year-old colt and as Aidan O'Brien's horses do tend to improve a lot, he certainly looks the one to beat in this.

The Vintage Stakes has thrown up some excellent winners in recent years, including Pinatubo and Expert Eye, and it would be disappointing if there isn't more to come from this son of Found yet on just his third career outing. The one to chase him home could well be Tom Dascombe's Devious Company who is rated 104, and won twice at Haydock then finished second in the Superlative at Newmarket, but I think Battleground will be too good for them today.

Mark Johnston has enjoyed plenty winners at this meeting

Back Tulip Fields @ 7/2 Goodwood 16:55

A tricky-looking finale to day one but I do like the look of the Mark Johnston three-year-old filly Tulip Fields who had plenty of options this week but they have decided to keep her against her own sex over a trip she excelled at in another fillies handicap at Newmarket last month. And prior to that she was a winner here so has to be respected back down in class for a stable that has enjoyed huge success in handicaps at this meeting down the years. She likes ground with good in the description so conditions will suit and she wasn't disgraced when third in Listed company at Hamilton when last seen, so back in calmer waters she should run a big race.

Dancing Approach is the current market leader and it's not hard to see why. She arrives on a hat-trick but will have to defy another 8lb rise if she is to win this. Thomas Greatrex's claim will help with that but others are preferred. Time Voyage is an interesting runner at a double figure price and has some decent form but Asiaaf may be a bigger danger to the selection being less exposed, my worry with her is that she'll need to settle better to last out this longer trip.
