Timeform pick out three bets for Wednesday's UK racing...
"He gets a 5 lb pull in the weights with Flying Officer, who was one length ahead of him in the Long Distance Cup over C&D last season..."
Clever Cookie - Ascot 15:20
Clever Cookie was beaten at odds-on on his reappearance at Nottingham last time, but he was well below his best and is worth another chance here (possibly change in tactics did not suit). He gets a 5 lb pull in the weights with Flying Officer, who was one length ahead of him in the Long Distance Cup over C&D last season, and should make that count with Ryan Moore taking over in the saddle for the first time. Last year's winner Mizzou is still lightly raced and makes up the shortlist.
Washington DC - Ascot 15:55
Washington DC went down by just two lengths to the current favourite for the 2000 Guineas Air Force Blue (who subsequently scored twice at Group 1 level) in the Phoenix Stakes last season, and he sets a smart standard in this race. He also arrives here fit after a smooth listed success at Dundalk earlier this month and, with more improvement to come, should be hard to beat here now back down in trip. Gifted Master is unbeaten in four starts since having a gelding operation and could be the selection's biggest threat.
Swirral Edge - Pontefract 17:25
Swirral Edge improved markedly for the step up to this trip when winning at Ayr on nursery debut on her final start of last season (pulled three lengths clear with the second, who has won since) and could well have more to offer, up just 5 lb in the weights, given her profile and the form of her yard, who are firing on all cylinders at present. Wishsong was not seen to best effect at Wolverhampton last time, and heads the list of dangers to the selection.
