Timeform UK SmartPlays: Wednesday July 27
Timeform select their three best bets from Goodwood on Wednesday.
"The Gurkha ran a creditable second in the Eclipse on his next start, and the French 2000 Guineas winner is taken to get back to winning ways on Wednesday."
Ulysses - 14:35 Goodwood
Ulysses carries a big reputation, by Galileo and out of Oaks winner Light Shift, he was sent off at 8/1 for the Derby after just winning a maiden, and he is well worth another chance here after enduring a rough race for such an inexperienced horse that day. His eight-length maiden success at Newbury was mightily impressive, and he is taken to belatedly build on that promise here and give Sir Michael Stoute a record ninth win in the Gordon Stakes. Qatari Hunter is stepping up from handicap company but is thriving at present and should put in a strong bid to land the five-timer.
The Gurkha - 15:10 Goodwood
With this quicker ground an unknown for Irish Guineas winner Awtaad (has not raced on ground better than soft since his first start) this might boil down to a match between the St James's Palace one-two Galileo Gold and The Gurkha, with Aidan O'Brien's colt getting the narrow decision over Galileo Gold given the St James's Palace winner had a tactical advantage the last time the pair met, benefiting from a positive ride in a modestly run race while The Gurkha was perhaps given too much to do based on the way things developed that day. The Gurkha ran a creditable second in the Eclipse on his next start, and the French 2000 Guineas winner is taken to get back to winning ways on Wednesday.
Big Time Baby - 15:45 Goodwood
Tom Dascombe sent out Kachy to win last year's Molecomb and his Big Time Baby looks to have a good chance of carrying the same colours to victory for a second successive year. Big Time Baby was seventh behind the likes of The Last Lion in the Norfolk at Royal Ascot, but he had only had the one start at that point (The Last Lion had had three) and though he acquitted himself well enough, he perhaps did a bit too much too soon. Big Time Baby resumed winning ways in a conditions race at Chester after Ascot, taking another step forward in the process, and he looks a fair price to reverse the Norfolk form with the standard-setting The Last Lion, who arrives here after a listed race win at Sandown and should give his running one again.
