Sun Cloud - 13:15 Haydock

Sun Cloud represents a ret-hot trainer/jockey combination in the form of Malcolm Jefferson and Brian Hughes, and arrives here on the back of a couple of respectable efforts over hurdles at Perth and Sedgefield, which should have blown away any cobwebs. He is a better horse over fences and faces a much easier task today compared to his last assignment in the Scottish Grand National last season, in which he was a respectable sixth. Second over C&D last November from 4 lb higher in the weights, he looks worth chancing.

Yala Enki - 14:25 Haydock

A competitive handicap as can be expected for the money on offer but with his yard hitting form it could be worth chancing Yala Enki, who went off too hard when fifth in this race last year but went on to show improved form, winning the Lanzarote at Kempton and a novice at Ascot. With only three starts in handicaps to his name, he could have more to offer yet. Progressive pair Two Taffs and Unowhatimeanharry are also highly respected.

Vaniteux - 15:15 Ascot

Vaniteux looked set to be placed in the Arkle behind Douvan before he unseated two out, and an opening handicap mark of 154 looks fair on the balance of that form as well as his three-and-a-quarter-length win over the ill-fated Arzal and Fox Norton at Doncaster in January. His main threat could come from Some Buckle, who is unexposed over fences and shaped much better than being pulled up suggested on his return two weeks ago at Aintree.
