Timeform UK SmartPlays: Saturday August 20

It's Ebor day at York on Saturday
It's Ebor day at York on Saturday

Timeform pick out three bets on Saturday from the final day of York's Ebor Festival.

"He remains open to further improvement and with that run now under his belt is expected to be hard to beat here."

Diploma - 14:15 York

Scottish didn't quite get the job done back in pattern company at Haydock last time but still showed improved form all the same and is respected here kept to the same grade. The three-year-old filly Diploma is perhaps open to more improvement, however, after she cemented herself as a smart horse here last time in a listed race. She beat Fireglow by three and a quarter lengths that day, and Mark Johnston's filly did the form no harm when winning a listed race herself next time out. A strong traveller, Diploma shouldn't be inconvenienced by the drop in trip here, and looks a strong contender here.

Blue Point - 15:25 York

This is a very competitive race as can be expected from the Gimcrack, but Blue Point stands out on Timeform ratings and overall potential going into the race having found the battle-hardened Mehmas a little too street wise in last month's Richmond Stakes at Goodwood. Blue Point had only two starts to his name heading into the Richmond, and it was his lack of experience rather than talent that was perhaps the difference between him and Mehmas that day. He remains open to further improvement and with that run now under his belt is expected to be hard to beat here. Simon Crisford's Mokarris could be the one to follow him home.

Heartbreak City - 16:00 York

The forecast rain will count against a few, but it may well be to Heartbeak City's advantage. Heartbreak City - raced only on going described as good or softer to date - has made good progress for his shrewd handler Tony Martin in both spheres since joining him from France in 2013. His twelve-length win in what had looked a competitive race at Cork on his reappearance here was a career-best on the Flat, and he has continued his progression since over hurdles, winning a handicap at Galway with something in hand after being trapped behind a wall of horses. He looks a key player with the late defection of fellow Irish raider Ivan Grozny.
