Timeform Radio Tip: Topamichi different class

Lingfield stage a mixed turf and AW card again today.

Rory Delargy picks out a couple of bets on today's card at Lingfield...

"The handicapper has raised Topamichi 4 lb for his latest run, but that new mark won't kick in until next time, and he is essentially racing a grade below his natural ability here. He should quite simply outclass his rivals."

It's a decidedly low-key afternoon of racing from Brighton, Lingfield and Hamilton, with today's main action being the excellent card at Sandown this evening. Hopefully the workaday fare in the afternoon will provide a winner or two, however.

Best bet of the afternoon is the Mark Tompkins-trained Topamichi in the 15:20, an extended 9f handicap which will be run in soft conditions. The give underfoot will be no problem to the son of Beat Hollow, whose dam was a four-time winner for the yard.

Topamichi got off the mark in a heavy-ground maiden at Carlisle as a juvenile, thereby proving himself on deep going, and he showed he had trained on well when an excellent neck second to Alcaeus in a 1¼m handicap at Redcar last week. The pair pulled clear of the third in a competitive affair, and that form looks solid. Alcaeus is an odds-on favourite to beat a stronger field at Hamilton this afternoon, but Tompkins' charge is able to race off the same mark in a lower grade race here. The handicapper has raised him 4 lb for his latest run, but that new mark won't kick in until next time, and he is essentially racing a grade below his natural ability here. He should quite simply outclass his rivals.

If there is a danger in the race, now that the intriguing Loraine is a non runner, it's Amanda Perrett's handicap debutant Ebony Roc. This Shirocco gelding showed very little last year, but was never placed to show off his true ability, and is a hard one to peg down in terms of a mark (hint: he shouldn't have been given one). He is something of a dark horse from a yard in flying form, but would need to be well ahead of his opening mark in order to beat the selection, and will be well flagged up in the market.

I've tipped Bright Glow before, and am happy enough to make her a bet again in the 17:20. A winner over 7f at Kempton on her return, she was given a poor ride when second to Sylvia Pankhurst over 6f here last time in a race where the winner made all. Despite the fact that the drop in trip was against her, Ted Durcan was happy to ride her for a turn of foot last time, and that proved fatal on a day where front runners held sway throughout the card. The way she stormed home after the winner had got first run showed that she was still well ahead of her mark, and even if the tactics are repeated today, the return to 7f will be enough to see her back to winning ways from an identical mark.

Recommendations:
Both at Lingfield

Back Topamichi @ 2.767/4 in the 15:20 (NAP)
Back Bright Glow @ 3.9 in the 17:20 (NB)
