Phil Thompson outlines the best plays from Leicester on Sunday...
The 12:40 at Leicester is unlikely to prove the strongest novice handicap chase run this season and it looks a gilt-edged opportunity for Stellar Notion to make a successful chasing debut. Tom George's gelding created a good impression when winning a bumper at Bangor on his Rules debut last season and went some way to confirming that impression when winning a novice hurdle at Newcastle and then chasing home Un Ace (received 6 lb) in a similar event at Doncaster on his only other outing. That Un Ace was subsequently thought good enough to contest the Supreme Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham and has scored twice over fences this season, reflects well on Stellar Notion in relation to this contest and he looks capable of doing some serious damage off a mark (120) that has the potential to prove very lenient.
The 14:15 at Leicester looks a decent race for the grade, but Venetia Williams' John Louis looks the one open to most improvement. A useful Flat performer when in the care of Philip McBride, John Louis caught the eye on a couple of occasions in novice company last season and shaped encouragingly on his return from an eight-month absence when 14 lengths sixth of 19 to Chesterfield on his handicap debut at Cheltenham last time, travelling well and making good progress along the unfavoured inside before his effort flattened out as the route/absence seemed to take toll in the closing stages. John Louis is entitled to have come on plenty for that outing and, given a mark of 110 leaves him well treated on the pick of his Flat efforts, he looks sure to make a bold bid.
