Timeform Irish SmartPlays: Saint Gervais to go one better at Navan

Joseph O'Brien rides Saint Gervais in the finale at Navan

Today's Irish SmartPlays will tackle the testing conditions at Navan this afternoon.....

With Joseph O'Brien looking an eye-catching jockey booking, Saint Gervais looks sure to make a bold bid on his handicap debut in this sphere...

The nursery at 14:35 looks a competitive affair, but Cool Metallic is taken to finally get off the mark. The Dermot Weld-trained gelding was reported to be clinically abnormal after disappointing on his nursery debut at Galway two months ago. However, he had shown fair form in a number of maidens prior to that effort and, given he has been dropped 3 lb since his last run, he looks worth another chance this afternoon.

It would be fair to say that Rigoletta (16:15) took her time in getting off the mark, in fact she didn't reach the winners enclosure until the twelfth attempt at Dundalk early last month. However, she soon doubled her tally when getting up close home in minor event at Fairyhouse last time. The ground was heavy that day, so today's conditions shouldn't be a problem, and she looks capable of scoring again off her current mark.

Saint Gervais scored twice in bumpers before developing into a useful hurdler and he has shown progressive form in a trio of amateur minor events since being switched to the Flat. The John Kiely-trained gelding showed useful form when chasing home Missunited in similar conditions at Listowel last time and, with Joseph O'Brien looking an eye-catching jockey booking, Saint Gervais looks sure to make a bold bid on his handicap debut in this sphere.
