Timeform Irish SmartPlays: Potomac a step ahead of the handicapper

Who are you backing on Irish Derby day at the Curragh?

The Irish Derby is the obvious highlight of this evening's Curragh meeting, but that doesn't look to be a great betting heat, so Timeform's Irish team have unearthed three win bets elsewhere on the eight-race card.

"Potomac impressed with the manner in which he swept clear late on that day, looking to be idling quite badly in front, and a 7 lb penalty isn't expected to be enough to stop him following up".

Sharestan (16:45) was an impressive winner of the Irish Lincolnshire on his return here in March and had perfectly valid excuses for tasting defeat on his next two starts, simply given too much to do in a C&D Group 3 contest won by Windsor Palace in May. With his sights lowered, Sharestan made no mistake in a listed contest back here last month, value for more than the winning margin whean beating Defining Year by half a length. The drop back to a mile shouldn't pose him any problems in the likely conditions, and he's preferred to chief market rival Mizani.

Potomac looked to have plenty in hand when beating a few of this today's rivals at Cork last time and will prove very difficult to beat if reproducing that effort in the 17:20. Andrew Oliver's gelding ran away with a mile Southwell maiden (in cheekpieces) in 2010 for John Gosden, and had plenty to spare when beating Bold Thady Quill for that aforementioned success in Mallow. He impressed with the manner in which he swept clear late on that day, before looking to idle quite badly in front, and a 7 lb penalty isn't expected to be enough to stop him following up.

The 17:55 looks a typically competitive renewal of the Paddy Power Sprint, though Seanie caught the eye in a minor event at Fairyhouse earlier in the month, finishing a never-nearer third to Elusive Ridge in a race where those held up struggled to land a blow. An emphasis on stamina at six furlongs is expected to play to his strengths, and he looks overpriced to give David Marnane another big handicap success.
