There is an all Flat card at Cork to kick off their 3-day Easter meeting and we have picked out three more SmartPlays...
"...Fortify shaped as if still in need of the experience when runner-up to the subsequent Killavullan Stakes second Beyond Thankful (Frozen North back in third) at Roscommon in October."
An Saighdiur improved in leaps and bounds last year, winning five times and rounding off his campaign with a close third in the Ayr Silver Cup, and can take another step up the sprinting ladder in the listed Cork Stakes at 15:10. Andy Slattery's gelding shaped well when a close fifth to All Ablaze on his seasonal reappearance at Dundalk last time and has a good record when the ground is softer than good. He isn't ideally drawn in stall 2 but that shouldn't be a big issue in a small field and this isn't a strong race for the grade.
Danequest has just one win from twenty one starts on the Flat to his name but he has plenty going for him in the apprentice handicap at 17:15. Although he didn't manage to get his head in front last season he did make the frame on five separate occasions (all from higher marks than the one his runs from here) and he has been running well over hurdles of late. Trip and ground hold no fears for him and the promising Luke Dempsey takes a handy four pounds off his back.
Aidan O'Brien will be busy supervising the likes of Imperial Monarch and St Nicholas Abbey at Meydan today, but he can send punters home happy from Cork as his Fortify looks the one to beat in the concluding maiden. Unfancied when third of four at Listowel on his debut, Fortify shaped as if still in need of the experience when runner-up to the subsequent Killavullan Stakes second Beyond Thankful (Frozen North back in third) at Roscommon in October. Fortify will be suited by the step up to this trip, won't be inconvenienced by the underfoot conditions and is open to more improvement than his main market rival Polished Rock.
