Some top-class action at Leopardstown on Champions Day gets underway at 15:40 this afternoon and our Irish team have three win selections for the eight-race card....
"Dermot Weld's mare has been a real force in fillies/mares races for some time now and was so impressive when beating Together in this 12 months ago".
Battle of Marengo (16:10) created a really strong impression when winning at Gowran last time, looking something out of the ordinary when beating Flameseeker by eleven lengths, still appearing to be full of running going past the line. Aidan O'Brien's runner holds a number of Group 1 entries and, though the likes of Thunder Mountain and Dibayani are respected, it wouldn't surprise us to see Battle of Marengo stamp himself as a serious Derby candidate before the season's out.
Duntle is well worth her place in a Group 1 after winning at Royal Ascot and this track the last twice, but she looks plenty short enough in the betting for what she has actually achieved and last year's winner Emulous (16:40) makes plenty of appeal at around 4.0. Dermot Weld's mare has been a real force in fillies/mares races for some time now and was so impressive when beating Together in this 12 months ago. It's not hard to forgive her a rare poor effort when behind Chachamaidee at Royal Ascot last time, that her first ever run outside Ireland, and she's taken to make amends with victory in another Group 1.
Champion jumps trainer Willie Mullins has a couple of interesting runners on today's card, none more so than Call Me Bubbles (19:20) in the finale, and despite another big hike in the weights, he's expected to complete a hat-trick of wins. His form has taken off since stepped up to middle-distances, and another extra couple of furlongs promise to eek out further improvement, the further he went the better he looked when beating subsequent winner Inis Meain at Galway last time. This is admittedly a competitive affair with numerous other in-form rivals in competition, but there are few more progressive Flat handicappers in training than Call Me Bubbles and 5.8 looks more than fair about his chances.
