Three more selections from the Irish Smartplays team at Dundalk.....
Calgacus actually shaped a bit better than the result that day, doing best of those held up
First up this evening is Measured Approval (18:35) who is aiming to land the apprentice handicap for the second year in a row. Following a largely successful 2011, which also included a victory at Naas, he warmed up for tonight's event with an outing at Limerick last month. Although he only finished sixth behind Bankroll that day, Measured Approval travelled as well as anything during the race before failing to quicken and ultimately shaping as if in need of the outing. With a good draw and good amateur rider booked, a bold bid is expected.
Next up is the Mark Johnston-trained Van Ellis (19:05) who is a confident selection having shaped so well in a valuable sales race over six furlongs at Newmarket on his debut. A 75.074/1 shot that day, Van Ellis eventually finished fifth to Valbchek, having travelled strongly and briefly quickened to the front two furlongs out. The fact Van Ellis was set such a stiff task on his first visit to the track highlights he must be held in high regard at home and, given he looked in need of the outing beforehand, he should be up to taking tonight's maiden before going onto better things.
Last but by no means least is Dermot Weld-trained Calgacus (20:05) who improved markedly on his sole juvenile effort when finishing two lengths third to Azamata at Leopardstown on his reappearance. Calgacus actually shaped a bit better than the result that day, doing best of those held up and, whilst he would ideally want a bit further than this evening's extended ten and a half furlongs, he is expected to take all the beating.
