Timeform Irish SmartPlays: Tof to lord it over his rivals
Timeform's Irish team look at today's cards at Naas and Cork.
"Tofino Bay should improve on anything he showed over hurdles now tackling the larger obstacles and his second behind Get Me Out Of Here in a Grade 2 Fairyhouse event over timber proved he's undoubtedly smart in that sphere."
Manieree (15:25 Naas) had a good 2011, winning in Group company on her final two starts and while she hasn't added to that tally yet this term, she can get back on the scoresheet in the feature race of the card. Off the track for almost 12 months after getting the better of Sapphire in the Blandford Stakes, form that looks very strong given that filly's subsequent progress, her three recent runs haven't been without merit, ridden too aggressively for the conditions in the Group 1 Prix de l'Opera a fortnight ago. Before that she finished ahead of today's main rival Chrysanthemum when attempting to retain her Blandford crown and while David Wachman's charge bounced back to form in a similar event at Cork yesterday, Manieree should come out on top here.
Several promising chasing types line up in the novice event at Cork, with Tofino Bay (16:20 Cork) right at the top of that list. Representing the Gigginstown Stud operation, he should improve on anything he showed over hurdles now tackling the larger obstacles and his second behind Get Me Out Of Here in a Grade 2 Fairyhouse event over timber proved he's undoubtedly smart in that sphere. Having jumped soundly when getting off the mark on his chasing debut at Navan last month, this looks his for the taking despite the presence of 2011 Galway Hurdle winner Moon Dice, who made an early exit on his recent chasing introduction.
Montebell (17:00 Naas) is a lightly raced but progressive filly and despite being raised another 3 lb for her recent Curragh success, she makes plenty of appeal off a mark of 95 in what may be her last race in handicap company. That victory came after a four month absence before which she had got closest to future Group 3 winner Hartani at Tipperary and connections will surely be hoping the daughter of Dylan Thomas takes this on the way to bigger and better things.
