"He remains potentially very well-handicapped in this sphere given the fair form he showed for previous connections over fences..."

16:30 - TOP OF THE GLAS (6) fared better than the bare result when second on his most recent outing over hurdles at Perth in April, the only one to even attempt to land a blow on the winner and likely to have finished even closer under a more conservative ride. That still represented as good an effort as any he has produced over hurdles and - a winner on the Flat at Carlisle in July - Top of the Glas is expected to make his class tell and can open his account over hurdles at the ninth time of asking.

17:05 - BLAKE DEAN (3) was back over hurdles at Perth last time and went one better than when second at Sedgefield just five days previously, travelling better than can often be the case and staying on strongly as he pulled six lengths clear in the closing stages. He is clearly thriving at present and - 2 lb clear of his nearest rival on Timeform ratings - Blake Dean is fancied to see off the attentions of Formidableopponent and can register his third win of the season in this second leg of the Placepot.

17:35 - GRAN PARADISO (2) was suited by the way the race developed when successful on his most recent outing at Sedgefield, held up in a race where those ridden patiently came to the fore and always doing enough to hold on for a first victory over hurdles. That form gives him the edge over Wazowski on Timeform ratings and, although hurdling debutant Black Ivory is an obvious danger, Gran Paradiso remains open to more improvement in this sphere and looks the most solid proposition with the Placepot in mind.

18:05 - PRESENT LODGER (1) shaped well when second on his return from seven months off the track at Perth last time and was arguably the one to take out of the race with the future in mind. Indeed, he proved better than ever on that occasion, travelling smoothly into contention as the field turned into the straight and the lack of a recent run perhaps starting to tell when held in the closing stages. He is entitled to improve with that outing under his belt and can prove too strong for some out of form rivals here, with Ballyben feared most on debut for the Malcolm Jefferson yard.

18:35 - DOWN TIME (8) ran better than for a while when stepped up in trip on his most recent outing at Sedgefield, kicking on as the field went out onto their final circuit and keeping on at the one pace to finish a six and three quarter lengths fourth. He remains potentially very well-handicapped in this sphere given the fair form he showed for previous connections over fences and is fancied to build on the promise of last time with victory in this penultimate leg of the Placepot. Wyfield Rose is in terrific form at present and is expected to give the selection most to do.

19:05 - MAGNOLIA RIDGE (2) made it two wins from three starts in cheekpieces at Market Rasen in July - the first of which coming over this C&D earlier in the month - and ran at least as well when second on his most recent outing at Sedgefield. He was no match for the most progressive winner on that occasion, but showed enough to suggest he will remain competitive off his current mark and this son of Galileo is expected to take all the beating if arriving in Northumberland in the same form.
