Through The Card: Goodwood, Tuesday July 26
Timeform take you through the card on the first day of Glorious Goodwood.
"Best Solution caught the eye on his debut at Windsor and he looks sure to progress."
14:00 - Mark Johnston has won two of the last four renewals of this race and his Fire Fighting, third last year from an 8 lb higher mark, looks a very solid option. He was kept very busy in 2015, winning four times, and he seems to be working his way back to his very best this season. He was three lengths sixth of 19 to Educate in the John Smith's Cup at York last time, doing well to make up ground from the rear in a steadily-run race. The big, strong Zetland Cup winner Revolutionist should have no issue with top weight and also worth including for the Placepot, despite being below form in the same race at York last time. Another John Smith's Cup flop, Our Channel - representing an in-form trainer and from a good draw - is respected, as is Best of Times who raced on a disadvantaged side of the track at Sandown last time.
14:35 - The three from the Richard Hannon stable are all respected (perhaps Larchmont Lad is the most interesting given the turn of foot he showed when winning at Sandown), but this could come down to a battle between Ballydoyle and Godolphin (both also successful in this event in the past). On these terms, War Decree gets the narrow vote ahead of his Superlative conqueror Boynton who must carry a 3 lb penalty for that success. War Decree won a seven-furlong maiden at Leopardstown on his debut from two stablemates, and he improved when close behind Boynton in the Superlative.
15:10 - Nothing on Timeform ratings between Home of the Brave and Dutch Connection but the latter looks to have been aimed at this race for some time and he rates a banker. Dutch Connection was second in the Mile at Sandown (neck behind Toormore) in April and then a creditable second to Mutakayyef in the Summer Mile Stakes at Ascot last time, travelling well and making smooth headway 2f out but unable to match the winner's finishing effort. Fellow Godolphin runner Home of the Brave chases a hat-trick after wins at Leicester and Haydock (Timeform Jury Stakes) and is respected, however he may get taken on for the lead by Gifted Master.
15:45 - The trip could be ideal for Ascot Stakes third Qewy however narrow preference is for King Bolete who looks sure to be in the firing line throughout. He gave the impression that he was only just doing enough when victorious at Haydock last month (beat subsequent Old Newton Cup winner Tawdeea), but it was another step forward from his reappearance win at Ascot in May, and this longer trip should be within range. Gang Warfare shaped better than the bare result when 9 lengths twelfth of 20 to Antiquarium in Northumberland Plate at Newcastle last time, however a better option could be Fun Mac who has been below form both starts this year but has run well at the track before and represents a stable in good form.
16:20 - Thesme - better than ever when ¾-length third of 19 to Alpha Delphini at York last time, faring best of those ridden prominently - looks a big player, however there is lots of pace on here and that could suit the hold-up horse Maljaa. Roger Varian's charge was back to his best when ¾-length seventh of 18 to Royal Birth at Ascot last time and he was second at this meeting last season. Speedsters Bowson Fred, Blithe Spirit and Brother Tiger are all considered, however a second vote goes to Harry Hurricane. He has disappointed in two starts since winning at York in May, but this looks the perfect race for him and he is another who has run well here before, finishing second over C&D in April.
16:55 - Harry Angel and Salouen both recorded good times on their respective debuts and the former gets the nod here. He only just failed to beat Reach High, keeping on well for hands and heels, and those who took part in the gamble on him that day can get their money back here. He remains with potential. Salouen hasn't reproduced his debut form in two starts since so is passed over here. Those who have run have all shown plenty, including Colonel Frank and Parys Mountain (stiff task in Coventry Stakes last time), however Best Solution caught the eye on his debut at Windsor and he looks sure to progress.
