"Twenty Eight Guns shaped much better than the end result at Plumpton three weeks ago, finding 25f in the mud too much of a test, and could be the answer back in trip"

14:00 - With the meeting having had to pass a morning inspection, the ground is clearly going to be extremely testing. This shouldn't be an issue for Preseli Rock given he was beaten just a short head on heavy ground over two miles here in December, and he did enough to suggest he stays today's twenty-furlong trip when third to Champers On Ice at Cheltenham since. Potters Corner is a danger with improvement expected, though he's yet to race on going slower than good (it was good to firm when he made his successful return at Chepstow). Never Equalled is proven on this surface and actually came out the best horse at the weights when trying to give 6 lb to Millanisi Boy last time.

14:35 - It's hard to be sure what Try It Sometime achieved when the sole finisher at Uttoxeter last month but it does show that he can cope with really testing conditions. This is probably a two-line race in terms of the Placepot, though, so we'll also take Slidecheck from the Alexandra Dunn yard that has shown a profit when having just one runner on a card (in a chase) over the last few years.

15:10 - Not a pretty race at all, a selling hurdle featuring four horses who've won 15 races from 113 starts under Rules between them and another who's making his debut under Rules having completed only two of his five outings in points. Just whack Calculated Risk into the Placepot, hope for the best and move on.

15:45 - Berea Boru continued his race-by-race progression to get off the mark at the third attempt over fences on heavy ground at Chepstow earlier this month, and the runner-up Emma Soda has won since, so he holds sound claims with further progress likely. Current odds of 4.03/1 about Berea Boru look fair, especially given second favourite Horatio Hornblower still has room for improvement in his jumping. Copper Birch could outrun his 8/1 price as he's well trated on some of his old form (actually Timeform top rated here but not open to as much improvement as Berea Boru).

16:15 - Four averagely-treated mares line up here, though Twenty Eight Guns shaped much better than the end result at Plumpton three weeks ago, finding 25f in the mud too much of a test, and could be the answer back in trip. Barton Rose is second on the Timeform weight-adjusted ratings behind Twenty Eight Guns, with the pair 8 lb clear of the other two.

16:50 - Monkey Kingdom is a potentially smart recruit to the hunter chase ranks and, with the step up to three miles expected to be within his reach, he should prove difficult to beat on his belated reappearance. Oscar Delta is the horse who jinked and unseated Jane Managan on the run-in when set to win the Foxhunter at the 2013 Cheltenham Festival and may give the selection most to think about on his first start under Rules for a new yard, despite his advancing years (now 13).

17:20 - Druid's Folly showed much improved form when pulling clear with an established sort on third start at Chepstow last month, and a repeat of that level may well suffice. He's also a tall sort with a good yard, so he should have something more to offer. Fille des Champs is bred to need time and distance (dam from family of Denman), but gets a 7 lb mares allowance and the same again courtesy of her rider Lewis Gordon's claim, while her yard (Evan Williams) shows a 16.9-pt profit to a level stakes with its bumper runners at Ffos Las in the last two years. Money for her would look significant.
