Sunday Irish Racing Tips: Mizaah and Not A Bad Oul Day can fight out finish

Aidan O'Brien again dominated Royal Ascot from an Irish perspective but the other trainers get their chance to get on the scoresheet at Gowran Park this afternoon...

"Not A Bad Oul Day might be up in grade but he is thriving at present and has an excellent record at this track which tends to produce specialists."

The bar is rightly set high for Aidan O'Brien at Royal Ascot but much of that is of his own doing and he again delivered when it mattered most this past week with six winners; sub-par performances from his team were infrequent too with only Churchill, Declarationofpeace and Alluringly really disappointing. The Irish challenge outside of O'Brien - Willie Mullins and Jessica Harrington excepted - was underwhelming, Jim Bolger and Dermot Weld managing only three runners between them, and while Ger Lyons at least tried with five runners, he simply didn't have the firepower.

One of the features of the meeting recently has been the depth of the Irish team; since 2010 and prior to this year, there had been 25 Irish winners not trained by O'Brien but only Mullins managed a win this time. Royal Ascot is hardly the sole barometer of a flat season but it doesn't bode well for those looking to compete with O'Brien in the top races at home for the rest of the summer - they will however be glad to see that he only has just four horses declared at Gowran this afternoon!

Gowran Park 15:05 - Take Mizaah and Oul Day against the field

Club Wexford backs up quickly after winning at Naas on Tuesday but he's long been a tricky sort and things went right for him in the week; the second finished quicker and likely would have won in a truer run race while the third met trouble at a crucial stage. There are negatives with some of the other fancied runners too; Araqeel makes it to the track infrequently and looks on a harsh mark while Secret Wizard prefers further and softer ground.

That leaves Mizaah and Not A Bad Oul Day and backing the pair works out just over a 3.02/1 shot. Mizaah has proved frustrating but often runs in better races than this and seven furlongs looks his ideal trip having run over further and shorter than it the last twice. Not A Bad Oul Day might be up in grade but he is thriving at present and has an excellent record at this track which tends to produce specialists. Well-drawn in stall one, there is little other pace in this and he could be able to dictate.

Gowran 16:35 - Make It Hurrah can bounce back from Killarney disappointment

There are plenty of obvious ones in this with good recent form like Noble Intention, Nimitz and Lady Clinch but it could be worth forgiving Make It Hurrah his last run at Killarney after which he was found to be coughing. Given time to recover from that, he is better judged on his previous runs at Cork both of which worked out well.

In the first of those he beat Keep Believing who has since won twice and is now rated 29lbs higher while in the more recent run he was placed behind Lady Derrynane who has acquitted herself well in better races since with subsequent winners like Hailstone, Sweetasever and Richard Strauss in behind. If anything, this step up in trip will suit him better than the mile distances he's been running over lately; not only does he shape that way but all his siblings proved best racing over ten furlongs plus.
