Sunday Irish Racing Tips: Tempest can storm home over longer trip

Sunday racing at Gowran Park.
Gowran Park is the sole meeting in Ireland this afternoon.

Royal Ascot is over for another year and it's back to basics at Gowran Park this afternoon where Tony Keenan has four horses to back...

"Tiny Tempest too is likely to have needed the run last time at Leopardstown and it came in a strong race for the grade with the likes of Dance Alone, Geological and Ice Cold In Alex showing the form in a good light since."

For once, the Irish story of Royal Ascot wasn't Aidan O'Brien. Four winners from 52 runners was an underwhelming total for Team Ballydoyle though they did get their Group 1 winner with Merchant Navy yesterday and it was enough to make O'Brien the leading trainer at the meeting. But the real standouts from Ireland this week were David Marnane and Jessica Harrington.

Marnane trains just 20 horses at the moment but his Hunt Cup win with a horse not long back from a broken pelvis brought his tally of major UK handicaps to four with previous wins in the Wokingham, Victoria Cup and the Portland.

If Settle For Bay was impressive, it is hard to know how to describe Alpha Centauri who gave her trainer a first winner at the royal meeting. Yes, she had been favourite for the Coronation Stakes but it looked a closely-matched field beforehand and I doubt anyone thought she would win six lengths and shape like the best miler around.

There is nothing of that level at Gowran this afternoon though Chiara Luna (runs in the 17:05) was sent off a similar price when they met in the Irish 1,000 Guineas last time.

Gowran Park 14:35 - Take two against the field in three-year-old handicap

Four horses from the race won by Waitingfortheday at Fairyhouse re-oppose now and it might be that Lady Sonia comes out on top. Typically a front-runner, she was slowly-way last time which was less than ideal and she met her share of trouble in the straight, finishing off well when finally getting room. Her previous second to Hey Pretty (now rated 12lbs higher) was a good run and there could be an easy lead for her if she breaks well with not much pace in the field.

At a bigger price, Windsor Diamond is also worth supporting. She was fourth in the Hey Pretty race on her penultimate run, shaping like a mile would suit, but when upped in distance last time looked like a seven-furlong horse; she was keen for much of the race and didn't really see it out having made a good move through the field. She was racing off 51 last time due to being out of the handicap but is off her proper mark now while that run was also against older horses with this looking an easier race confined to three-year-olds.

Gowran Park 15:05 - Top-weight Silverkode can make winning return

That Is The Spirit was back to form in winning over course-and-distance last time but sectional times say he got his own way in front and a proliferation of pace in this field (Turbine, Have A Nice Day, Tribal Path and Arbourfield) suggest making all will be more difficult. Sometimesadiamond is finally running at a level she can compete at having been campaigned in listed and group races since winning on debut and is on the shortlist but the class horse Silverkode could be most overpriced.

The wheels may have come off last backend but that was after a longish season and his second place off 99 in the big seven-furlong handicap over Irish Champions Weekend was excellent on the clock and suggests he can win a race like this off 97. His previous win at the Curragh worked out well too and while fitness has to be taken on trust there is enough juice in the price to allow for that.

Gowran Park 16:35 - Extra distance to suit Tiny Tempest

Birth Of Venus is the right favourite for another three-year-old handicap with the step up in trip in her favour; she is by High Chaparral and plenty of her siblings were best over middle distances. Not only did her Navan run come in a good time-figure but she was off a 69-day break so should improve for it. All this is in her price however and Tiny Tempest is also interesting at double-figure odds.

She too is likely to have needed the run last time at Leopardstown and it came in a strong race for the grade with the likes of Dance Alone, Geological and Ice Cold In Alex showing the form in a good light since. Her best run as a juvenile for Eve Johnson Houghton came when upped in trip so this extra distance should suit.
