Sunday Irish Racing Tips: Five horses to back on Easter Sunday

Two classy cards in Ireland today and Tony Keenan has found the value at Fairyhouse and Cork
Two classy cards in Ireland today and Tony Keenan has found the value at Fairyhouse and Cork

Fairyhouse hosts a pair of Grade 1s and there's a good card at Cork too, so Tony Keenan has found plenty to get stuck into this Easter Sunday...

"Velocity Boy looks overpriced though after an eye-catching second over an insufficient trip at Navan last time, closing well in a better final sectional than the winner. That run came off a break so he should improve while this distance will suit better."

1 Point Back Velocity Boy @ 9.417/2 or bigger in the Cork 15:55

Punchestown is yet to come but the day-to-day of Irish racing swings toward the flat around this time so I'm going to wrap up the figures for the winter season now. In the 21 columns since early November I've advised 109 bets with 35 winning, a strikerate of 32%. 127 points were staked and returned a profit of 32.1 points (commission taken out) with return-on-investment of 1.25.

To say I'm happy with that would be an understatement and I hope I can keep things going on the flat.

Fairyhouse 15:05 - Take the Limini angle into this Grade 1

I think Limini is the key to this Grade 1 novice and the two I like tie in with her, directly and indirectly. Cashelard Lady chased home the Cheltenham winner over this course last time with sectionals suggesting she went too hard and 10.09/1 is a big price about one that has thrived this term. Myska is the other on to be with at 7.06/1. It looks like she was kept away from the Festival as Limini was thought superior but this is much more winnable and she holds a verdict over the Jessber's Dream in December yet is nearly twice the price.

As to Jessber's Dream, it's hard to back an English mare with five of the first six in the Vroum Vroum Mag race trained in Ireland (only five Irish mares ran!) while I wonder how Jer's Girl will cope with competing with her elders.

Fairyhouse 15:40 - Fire In Soul has potential to make the graded leap

Lift The Latch heads the betting but I wasn't as impressed as some with his defeat of a 110 type last time and his stable has been under a cloud all season. Acapella Bourgeois seems more solid though he has to concede weight while American comes off a break and 141 seems to overrate him.

Our Duke would have a big chance if coming back to the form of his Leopardstown win but I like the potential of Fire In Soul. He did a very good time in winning his maiden hurdle, jumping really slickly, and he should improve plenty for that given how weak he was in the betting.

Cork 15:55 - Velocity Boy can show speed

With the way his form has worked out, Coolaghknock Glebe is a worthy market leader in this Grade C, the blinkers having brought both improvement and consistency. Velocity Boy looks overpriced though after an eye-catching second over an insufficient trip at Navan last time, closing well in a better final sectional than the winner. That run came off a break so he should improve while this distance will suit better. It would be no surprise to see him revert to the forcing tactics he used as a novice last season.

Fairyhouse 16:15 - Scoundrel can cause an upset in the Ryanair

There is little doubt that Outlander is the best horse in this but he backs up very quickly off a fall at Cheltenham and the wheels did come off his novice hurdle season last year at this meeting. On official ratings Kylemore Lough is the one to take advantage but his mark has been achieved in small field novice handicaps and might prefer softer ground.

At the prices, Lord Scoundrel is worth chancing. He was a bit unlucky here in January where he met trouble behind Bridgets Pet and Morning Assembly, a race that worked out well at the Festival, and won well at Thurles last time, giving weight to a decent sort in Tennis Cap. He's mixed it with some fair novices this winter and better ground will suit so he might be able to cause an upset.
