Sunday Irish Racing Tips: De Bromhead can continue good run at Leopardstown

There are three graded races at Leopardstown today and Henry De Bromhead has a strong hand in each
There are three graded races at Leopardstown today and Henry De Bromhead has a strong hand in each

It's Henry De Bromhead and not Willie Mullins who dominates the betting for today's graded action at Leopardstown and Tony Keenan thinks the Waterford trainer will have a big day...

"One can make a strong case that Some Plan should be unbeaten over fences – he was travelling well when falling two out at Cheltenham in November and has won his other two starts – and there was lots to like about his win at Naas early in the month."

1 Point Back Some Plan @ 3.613/5 or bigger in the Leopardstown 14:30

If this weekend has taught us anything, it is that nothing stays the same in racing. Over the past two days, both Faugheen and Min were ruled out of Festival prep runs, Vroum Vroum Mag showed a degree of vulnerability for the first time since joining Team Mullins and Thistlecrack lost his unbeaten record over fences.

Those events have thrown a number of Cheltenham ante-post markets into flux with Un De Sceaux and Unowhatimeanharry among the few big name horses to come through the weekend with reputation intact; the latter in particular looks a solid favourite for the Stayers Hurdle, not least because it's a weak race overall.

This afternoon's meeting at Leopardstown is a bit disappointing in truth. The absence of Faugheen and Min is a big part of that and there is no standout bet on the card. I could just about talk myself into Nichols Canyon in the Champion Hurdle as he has more depth to his form than Petit Mouchoir and connections have implied they have sorted what caused his below-par effort last time. Petit Mouchoir was visually impressive that day but was helped by making all at a slow pace and I would at least expect the runner-up to get closer now.

Leopardstown 14:00 - Monalee can back up Death Duty form

It looked as if Let's Dance took a big step forward last time in winning her first graded race but there's also the possibility she beat a non-stayer in Slowmotion and is flattered; the second travelled well to two out but emptied in the straight. Consequently, I want to take her on at a short price. A number of the maiden winners in the field have potential but the horse with about the best piece of form is Monalee and he's not exactly exposed either.

The maiden hurdle he won back in November has proved strong form - both the second and third are bordering on 140 types now - and his second to Death Duty is obviously a fine effort given that one had more experience over hurdles at the time. Drying ground is a concern but the price offers enough juice where you can take a chance.

Leopardstown 14:30 - Arkle can go to De Bromhead with Some Plan

Identity Thief seems priced on reputation in the Irish Arkle; his chase form is nothing out of the ordinary and comes here off a pulled up effort when his jumping was poor and that was only 34 days ago. Bleu Et Rouge is a horse with significant potential, doing very well to win last time considering how the race went, but the drop in trip looks against him and his jumping wasn't good enough for this speed test last time.

One can make a strong case that Some Plan should be unbeaten over fences - he was travelling well when falling two out at Cheltenham in November and has won his other two starts - and there was lots to like about his win at Naas early in the month. Despite racing keenly, he finished his race out well and going back on better ground looks ideal here.

Leopardstown 16:00 - O'Brien's Katnap to improve for debut effort

The race won by Courtncatcher over Christmas looks the key form line here but I'm inclined to take on both the winner and the runner-up Thomond as they race close to the pace in a slowly-run affair and look flattered. Katnap was sent off favourite for that race, largely because of a switch to Joseph O'Brien, but could never get into it after making a bad mistake at the second. He's worth another chance in a race that won't take much winning.
