Ireland hosts some run-of-the-mill fare this afternoon but Tony Keenan has found four horses to back at Fairyhouse...

"Punters may be getting frustrated with Captain Power, a beaten favourite in his last three starts, but he looks the horse in the field with the most upside still and things just haven’t gone his way in 2017."

This weekend is one of those inevitable lulls in the summer season, Super Saturday and the July Meeting giving way to a less than Super Sprint and the Summer Plate and Hurdle. It's a similar story in Ireland where recent classic weekends lead into some ordinary stuff at Fairyhouse and Tipperary today but it really is all about Galway here at the moment. Tomorrow sees the release of the weights for the Galway Plate and Hurdle which should lead to some feverish studying from punters as the pre-meeting hype finally switches from the fashion to the racing itself.

Fairyhouse 14:55 - Carabass can make good recent efforts Count

Richard O'Brien has made an excellent start to his training career, Alans Pride and Tom Dooley among his winners, and the latter is a worthy favourite here. The concern is the drop back to six furlongs as all bar one of his wins have come over further and the trainer might feel forced into running him under a penalty here with a rise in the weights imminent.

Count Of Carabass doesn't win too often - he's a lifetime two from 38 - but his last two runs have been excellent. Third in a higher grade to Severus and the aforementioned Alans Pride on his penultimate start, that pair is a combined 17lbs higher now, he should have finished much closer when sixth over course-and-distance last time where he met trouble twice. That run was achieved in a good time with a sectional upgrade too suggesting a mark of 53 is exploitable.

Fairyhouse 15:25 - Dropping mark to lead to Power win

Punters may be getting frustrated with Captain Power, a beaten favourite in his last three starts, but he looks the horse in the field with the most upside still and things just haven't gone his way in 2017. His return at Navan in April was excellent before he was caught out be a slow start that left him too far out of his ground at the Curragh next time. He then shaped like the best horse behind Club Wexford at Naas, disadvantaged by being held up off a pedestrian pace, and seemed ill-suited by being ridden forward last time over seven furlongs, a trip that in any case stretches him.

That's quite a few excuses admittedly but his mark has dropped from a peak of 93 last backend to 83 now and he seems well-suited to racing around a turn; his figures under such conditions reading:4311212.

Fairyhouse 16:25 - Galway-bound Landsman one to note

Landsman is about the most interesting horse running today with a view to Galway and it could be significant that his yard seem to have finally found some form after a long period in the doldrums; Tony Martin managed just nine winners through early-July in 2017 but has had a pair of successes this week. Landsman is at least one of those that has run well in that period, shaping like a well-treated horse in a much stronger race than this last time at the Curragh, doing best of those held up in a slowly-run affair and meeting trouble too.

He has long looked one that can win a decent race on the flat, his second to the then-progressive My Direction last August and a good fifth at Fairyhouse the time before last just two runs that catch the eye. This probably isn't a decent race but he may need to win to ensure he gets into the big mile-and-a-half handicap at Galway on Friday week.

Fairyhouse 16:55 - Fiesole can continue good recent run

There is a chance Black Ruby will prove much the best of these having looked good on her first two starts but she was disappointing when notably strong in the market last time and has to get back on track now. Preference is for the thriving Fiesole who has not only won three of his last four starts but also seems to run well every time he appears on turf on the flat. The form of his last facile win at Limerick has generally worked out and probably should be favourite.
