Bets Of The Day: Will a Scorpion be number one on Sunday?

Two out of three bets landed yesterday, and our man Alan Dudman turns his attention to a couple of lays at Kelso on Sunday.....

"However, his trainer James Ewart has said previously that the 6yo can be a nightmare if they don't go a gallop. He needs cover, and his jumping can suffer."

Lay Scorpions Sting @ 1.501/2 in-running in the 15:45 at Kelso

14:10 Kelso - Vital Evidence

On flat ability, Vital Evidence would be up to winning a race like this, but from his hurdling career so far there are not many positives.

In three runs to date he's been turned over by 20, 77 and 26 lengths. He was completely tailed off at Bangor, whilst his effort at Carlisle left a bit to be desired as he didn't see his race out. There's a chance he needed his latest run here, but it didn't smack of me wanting to back him next time out.

His trainer Donald McCain is not in great form, with three winners since May 9th (from 30 runners at time of writing) and only three have been placed in that sequence.

With a lay, you need a few running for you, so I'm attacking him with a place lay at around 1.80.

15:45 Kelso - Scorpions Sting

I had two theories whilst working on air at Timeform Radio, and forgive me for going over old ground about two sires - Scorpion and Zamindar again. My view was (and still is) that some of their offspring can be a bit soft. One for jumps, one for the flat.

So with a quiet day on Sunday, I'm prepared to have a go at Scorpions Sting (with no apostrophe).

It's a poor contest, and there's a chance this horse will be quite short in the betting after winning a race at Sedgefield last time out. He beat some exposed characters there, but the front two did pull 11 lengths clear.

However, his trainer James Ewart has said previously that the 6yo can be a nightmare if they don't go a gallop. He needs cover, and his jumping hasn't always been foot perfect over hurdles. So with all this in mind, I'm not sure I want to be a backer for his first start over fences today.

He has three runner-up positions to date, with a 1.52 in-running defeat at Carlisle.

Watch this space for Scorpion lays, which starts this weekend.
