Bets of the Day: Mullins Magic at Leopardstown

Lets hope Willie Mullins is still all smiles after Sundays racing
Lets hope Willie Mullins is still all smiles after Sundays racing

Alan hit a winner at Haydock yesterday but played a draw on the day overall, and with Fontwell abandoned this after our man is keen to get one of the Sportsbook's racing specials on his side...

"It's the Willie Mullins show at Leopardstown on Sunday and I think we have found three of his short priced favourites to go in"

Back Mullins Magic - A Toi Phil (13:20) Faugheen (15:05) & Village Mystic (16:05) All To Win @ 3/1 Sportsbook

I will be honest with you, I was struggling to find a bet for today with the loss of Fontwell and a tricky all weather card at Chelmsford, but I got my eye on a Racing Special on the Sportsbook that got my attention...

Mullins Magic - A Toi Phil (13:20), Faugheen (15:05), & Village Mystic (16:05) All To Win @ 3/1

13:20 A Toi Phil

Willie Mullins has owned this race for the last four years and saddles the favourite this year for Gigginstown House Stud. He had a problem on his penultimate start when he veered and ran out early in the race but the Mullins team obviously corrected that when he turned up four days later to win his maiden here at Leopardstown.

That maiden form could also get a boost if Don't Touch It wins the opener, as that was who A Toi Phil beat on Boxing day. His Maiden win was over two furlongs shorter than this but he was staying on well at the end looking like the extra distance won't be a problem. The danger in the race appears to come from Jessica Harrington's Woodland Opera. He won his opening two races in some style but last time out was last of nine at this track at the end of December.

According to the market this is the hardest leg of the treble, but I think A Toi Phil will take some beating and if it does get home the 3/1 is now looking very attractive.

15:05 Faugheen

Another race owned by the Mullins yard, Hurricane Fly won this race for five consecutive years and as the Mullins team have the first three in the betting, you can't see them relinquishing their prize today. However, it is the wonder horse Faugheen that we need to get his head in front of his to stable companions.

Nichols Canyon is the only horse to have beaten Faugheen before and if he does it again here it will cause a major shake up in the Champion Hurdle market for the Cheltenham Festival. Arctic Fire is the third Mullins horse in the line up, he finished second in this race to Hurricane Fly last year and while he is a very decent hurdler, I can't see him stopping Faugheen taking his seventh Grade 1 success.

16:05 Village Mystic

Of the three this is actually the one I am most worried about, as I don't know anything about the horse. But what we do know is he is out of Saint Des Saints who has produced many group one winners and Tom Lancey who trained the horse in England is quoted as saying "this was one of the best point to pointers he had ever trained". The Mullins team haven't won this race since 2009 and by this time they could have had three if not four winners on the card so I would expect it to shorten in the market before the off, if it doesn't that would set off alarm bells.

If you have any doubt about this final leg then (assuming the first two have won of course) you can always cash out before this selection runs (either by using the feature in the sportsbook or by laying on the exchange) so at least you won't lose should Village Mystic not live up to his hype. However for the purposes of the P&L on this column I won't be trading out.
