Bets of the Day: Feel the Power at Newbury

Jim Crowley can steer World Power home
Jim Crowley can steer World Power home

Alan Thompson returns to the tipping chair today with a pair of selections from two tricky looking handicaps at Newbury and Hamilton...

"World Power has finished second on each of her last three starts, I think she is good enough to lose her maiden tag in this her handicap debut"

Back World Power @ 11/2 in the 16:55 Newbury

16:55 Newbury - Back World Power @ 11/2

Paul Cole's three-year-old filly World Power has finished second on each of her last three starts but with Jim Crowley doing the steering today I think she has enough to lose her maiden tag in this her handicap debut. She was sent off an odds-on favourite last time but was no match for the winner, losing by four lengths over six furlongs at Carlise. She raced far too keenly in the early stages that day, but despite that she still had enough to put six lengths between herself and the third, if she settles today the step back up to seven will suit.

Its a wide open contest as the betting suggests but I want to be against the current market favourite Cadeaux Boxer, he was only beaten a head over course and distance last time out but he was a 50/1 chance in that race and although he gets in here off the same mark, I am not convinced he is the one to be with. He is also a maiden after eight starts and in seven of those starts he was available at 20/1 or above in the market. He has been running in better company than this and he has come down the handicap to what could be a winnable mark but he won't win with any of my money on his back. I would rather take my chances with the daughter of the Coolmore stallion Power and hope that World Power takes her chance today.

20:55 Hamilton - Back Amy Blair @ 9/2

Amy Blair is looking to make it five wins at Hamilton in the penultimate race of the day, Keith Dalgiesh's four-year-old has never won at any other track. He was very disappointing last time out finishing last of 11 at Chester over 10 furlongs, where he faded badly after leading the race at the seven furlong pole, but that was also his first attempt at a trip beyond nine furlongs and I doubt we will see him attempt anything over that trip again. Prior to that race he had won two of his last three starts all at this track and I am sure he will enjoy being back on familiar territory tonight.
