Timeform analyse the field for the listed Pontefract Stakes on Sunday...
"Main Sequence has a bit to find with Brown Panther on balance, but his proven fitness swings the verdict in his favour..."
Brown Panther won this contest last year, and placed in Irish St Leger on penultimate outing. Big chance if fully wound up, but worth noting that he needed his reppearance in 2012.
Ed De Gas quickly developed into a useful type in 2012, winning first 3 starts. Largely struggled in Group 3 races thereafter, though, and no impact in 2 starts this year.
Main Sequence finished runner-up to Camelot in 2012 Derby, and bounced back from lacklustre return when ½-length second to Mukhadram in Brigadier Gerard Stakes last time. Form franked since, and cheekpieces tried now.
Saptapadi finished fifth in 2011 Ebor before abortive Australian campaign, and back on track when 4¼ lengths fifth of 12 to Sir John Hawkwood in handicap at York last time. Much more needed now, though.
Souviens Toi is a useful ex-Italian performer who was third on debut for new yard at Goodwood, and creditable fourth in Group 3 at Haydock last time. Bit more on her plate in this field.
Between Us improved when landing a brace of handicaps at up to 1½m in August, and good 2 lengths third of 10 to Swinging Sultan at Doncaster on return. Open to further progress, but this looks too tough.
Timeform 1-2-3:
1. Main Sequence
2. Brown Panther
3. Souviens Toi
Timeform Verdict: Main Sequence has a bit to find with Brown Panther on balance, but his proven fitness swings the verdict in his favour. Souviens Toi is best of the rest.
