Through The Card: Newcastle, Friday 1 March

All-weather action
There's action on the All-Weather at Newcastle on Friday evening

Timeform take you through the card at Newcastle on Friday...

"Raised just 2 lb for that, he looks worth supporting to follow that up by going in again."

Timeform on Jan Van Hoof

17:30 - CHARLES KINGSLEY (1) was a wide-margin winner on his debut at Beverley last September, and while he failed to land the odds on his most recent start at Lingfield on the all-weather in December, it was only late on that his challenge faultered, and given that he's the only out and out front-runner the field this evening, he's fancied to be tough to catch from the front for his in-form connections, and is preferred to the odds-on favourite Allieyf, who is open to progress after two promising starts, but is worth taking on after 303 days off.

18:00 - Basement-level stuff in which plenty of these have something to prove, meaning that JAI HANUMAN (9) appeals as the safest option. He's finished second both here and at Lingfield Park in his last two runs, looking unlucky to bump into an unusually progressive type for this level in the latter. He's only a modest maiden, but this isn't a dazzling race, and he's fancied to score. Highwayman is another solid performer for this level and is feared most, ahead of Tellovoi.

18:30 - JAN VAN HOOF (3) picked up his first win for three and a half years when scoring over C&D two weeks ago, winning by a narrow margin but looking value for extra considering he came from so far off the pace. Raised just 2 lb for that, he looks worth supporting to follow that up by going in again. The in-form Epeius is the obvious threat as he goes for the hat-trick, while Archimedes was only just denied by the selection last time.

19:00 - With those that have experience only setting a modest level of form, it looks worth siding with the newcomer SEVERNAYA (12), who makes plenty of appeal on paper (dam a half-sister to the useful two-year-old Floristry) and represents top connections, who have developed a habit of introducing some nice types at this track in recent years. She's taken to make a successful debut at the expense of Star of Valour, who looks a potential improver now switched to David Griffiths, while Blindingly is another who's entitled to improve for his debut run.

19:30 - SOLAR PARK (2) got off the mark in good style at the third attempt at Wolverhampton last month, making the most of a good opportunity to score by 13 lengths, and his opening mark looks a workable one. In receipt of 2 lb from main market rival Edgewood, he's fancied to follow up. Edgewood also won on his most recent start, but that came at Doncaster in November, and though he's open to more improvement yet, he doesn't have race fitness on his side. Klopp can prove best of the rest.

20:00 - A wide open finale, and with very little encouraging recent form on offer, the vote goes to PICKS PINTA (4), who wasn't able to follow up his win here when fourth at Wolverhampton 9 days ago, but that was a respectable effort nonetheless and he's fancied to go close off the same mark. Star Cracker and Windforpower are a couple of others to consider in what could prove a muddling race.
