Kevin Blake's Irish Racing Tips: Solid favourite looking to follow up British victory

Attentions turn to Gowran Park this afternoon for a card of competitive action on the Flat and Kevin reckons he has found some value plays that will help continue his good run of form...

The second division of the Live Music After Racing Handicap (16:25) is the stronger of the two divisions, but it has a very solid favourite in the shape of the Johnny Feane-trained Ying Yang.

The daughter of Thewayyouare really caught the eye on her third start in maidens in a six-furlong contest in July, very much shaping as though she would be capable of better when stepped up in trip in handicap company. She duly did just that in a seven-furlong handicap at Musselburgh last month, coming from off the pace to record an authoritative victory. Indeed, she was only really hitting top stride inside the final furlong, very much suggesting that this extra furlong will suit her even better.

Normally I am keen to oppose British form in low-level Irish Flat handicaps, as in my opinion low-level racing is much more competitive at this side of the Irish Sea, but such was the style of her victory and the very clear scope that she has for further improvement over this longer trip, I am happy to side with her as she bids to defy her 8lb rise in the ratings.

The Gowran Golf Memberships 2016 From 600 Euro Apprentice Handicap (16:55) is a typically wide-open contest for the grade and the one that I like is the Dave Marnane-trained Settle For Red.

The five-year-old has fared well since joining Marnane at the start of the year, winning twice and running well on a couple of other occasions. While it would be understandable to look at his recent form and suggest that the handicapper may have his measure off a mark of 60 bearing in mind that his three career wins have come off 59, 53 and 55, I feel that he has had excuses in recent starts. A mile-and-a-quarter on a sound surface when allowed some amount of peace in front appeal to me as being his optimum conditions and he has had them since his last win at Naas.

His last two runs have been particularly meritorious, as he was obliged to be dropped in from a poor draw over an inadequate trip at Killarney on his penultimate start and the ground was just too soft for him at Tipperary last time, yet he ran very well on both occasions.

Connor King is excellent from the front and while one can never guarantee anything in terms of pace in the unpredictable world of apprentice races, I suspect he'll have fair prospects of getting to the front on Settle For Red.

Its Harrys Girl has been ridden very positively of late, but I get the impression she would be better suited by a more patient ride and with her stepping up in trip here, it wouldn't surprise if her connections opt to ride her that bit more quietly. Other dangers include the less exposed pair of Sir Raston and Along The Shore, but all told I'll be disappointed if Settle For Red isn't bang there at the finish.
