The Galway Festival continues with the feature race of the meeting, the Galway Plate, the highlight on day three as the Timeform Irish team aim to bounce back...
The year-long absence is of no great concern, given he has gone well fresh in the past, and the feeling is that Wise Old Owl has been targeted at this event for some time....
The handicap hurdle at 15:35 looks a typically competitive event for the meeting, but the one that catches our eye is Ballyhoura. A fairly useful sort in bumpers, the Colm Murphy-trained gelding took longer than expected to get off the mark in this sphere, but there was a lot to like about his defeat of Uponthe Hoof at Wexford last time, as he travelled smoothly before battling on well to get up on the line. Those two qualities should stand him in good stead around this course and Ballyhoura looks capable of following up off his current mark.
There won't be many more imposing horses to run at this meeting than Streets of New York who lines up in the three-mile handicap hurdle at 16:10. The John Hanlon-trained gelding has only had two races over hurdles to date, but shaped well on both occasions, winning a maiden at Ballinrobe by five lengths before catching the eye when a staying-on third in a conditionals handicap at Punchestown in April. His recent spin on the Flat should have put him spot on for this and, with the step up in trip expected to suit, he looks sure to make a bold bid.
The feature race of the entire meeting is the Galway Plate (17:25) and this year's renewal is one of the most competitive we have seen in recent years. However, we will side with Wise Old Owl who has not been seen since finishing second in this race last year. A lightly-raced but useful chaser, Wise Old Owl was actually raised 10 lbs for last year's excellent effort, but, given the winner and those that finished immediately behind him went on to show improved form afterwards, it could be argued he should be rated even higher. The year-long absence is of no great concern, given he has gone well fresh in the past, and the feeling is that Wise Old Owl has been targeted at this event for some time.
