The Kerry National is the feature on day three of the Listowel festival.
"...it may be worth taking a chance with Muirhead at a price that's difficult to resist."
We start on the Flat, in a seven-furlong handicap at 15:00. The drop back to this trip saw Kodiac's Back open his account at Tipperary last month and he can follow up now he's got into the winning groove. Helen's Armada could yet find an opening and represents the yard who have won this for the last two years, while Tom Dooley has place claims again.
Vintage Nouveau (15:35) finished with running left in a Killarney handicap that's worked out last time and should prove up to this level. For all the step up in grade, it's a surprise he isn't shorter- a winner off a mark of 98 would normally put up a similar level of performance to an average listed winner. Tarana is consistent and looks the main danger, ahead of Inis Meain.
The Kerry National (16:40) is a typically wide-open renewal. Usuel Smurfer has to go on any shortlist following his narrow defeat after being poorly placed at Galway in August, but it may be worth taking a chance with Muirhead at a price that's difficult to resist. He was a good third off a higher mark in this contest last year and shaped well in refitted blinkers over hurdles at Kilbeggan recently. Heaney and Casey Top are others with claims.
