Timeform Irish SmartPlays: Sunday January 26

It's a big day at Leopardstown
It's a big day at Leopardstown

A day of top action at Leopardstown comes under Timeform's inspection...

"An enthusiastic front runner, Defy Logic could be difficult to peg back on soft ground today."

Willie Mullins has a strong hand in the Irish Arkle (13:30) with both Felix Yonger and Mozoltov, each of them having more to offer, but the one to beat is the Paul Nolan-trained Defy Logic, who was most impressive when taking a Grade 1 over C&D last month. An enthusiastic front runner, Defy Logic could be difficult to peg back on soft ground today.

A handicap chase that follows (14:00) over the same C&D is a tricky affair in which the solid option appears in the shape of Treat Yourself who was a good second on handicap chase debut last time. With Slew Charm now out, Golden Ticket is fancied to be the main threat reunited with AP McCoy.

We skip the Irish Champion Hurdle, with the field small and prices about reflective of their respective chances. The Grade 2 novice immediately afterward (15:10) is more ripe for a bet, with the Mullins-trained Sure Reef preferred. He made up for a blip on hurdles debut when winning here last month, and merits maximum respect. Dangers abound, though, with Wounded Warrior looking a bright prospect on his recent debut over obstacles, while Gilt Shadow will find this trip more to his liking that when behind The Tullow Tank in the Royal Bond.
