Timeform Irish SmartPlays: Roman Numeral can march to victory

Clonmel plays host to racing on Thursday evening.

Timeform's Irish team examine three races at Clonmel on Thursday...

"Roman Numeral is the only recent winner in the field, and with this sharp test expected to be in his favour, he is taken to see off Sulki Rose..."

Longshadow (18:55) showed much improved form to win at Wexford last Saturday and, although the drop back to 1¼m isn't ideal, is taken to confirm that form with Sweet Refusal. The three-year-old stepped up markedly on previous form when making virtually all in an 11.7f handicap at Wexford on Saturday; he looks the one to beat again with just a mandatory 5 lb penalty to carry here.

Elijah Gardner (20:00) can open his account with the step up in trip sure to suit. Bumper winner Bally Longford and Betheholyman are dangers. Elijah Gardner sets the standard on Leopardstown (2m) fifth in December to Flaxen Flare and should have come on for Kilbeggan return at the start of the month. Step up in trip will suit in tongue tie.

The 20:30 is a competitive handicap at a modest level and the vast majority have some sort of chance. However, Roman Numeral is the only recent winner in the field, and with this sharp test expected to be in his favour, he is taken to see off Sulki Rose. Premier Steel is another that should benefit from conditions and he can make a place.
