Timeform Irish SmartPlays: Paddy O'Dee the value play

The Irish action once again revolves around Galway

Wednesday's Irish SmartPlays consist of three selections from Galway

Paddy O'Dee is much more at home over fences than hurdles and looks slightly overpriced in the 18:05 handicap chase.

Twinlight can get backers off to a good start in the opening 15:55 hurdle contest. Still lightly raced, the five-year-old gelding reverts back to timber having last been seen when falling over fences at Thurles in November. Ostensibly a confidence-retrieval mission today, it is no bad move given that he was a (slightly fortunate) Grade 3 winner on debut for Willie Mullins before showing improved form behind Grandouet in the Grade 1 Champion four-year-old Hurdle at the Punchestown Festival in 2011. The step up to two-and-a-half miles is an unknown, but this is a significant drop in class compared to the aforementioned races and it is hoped that his natural ability will see him home.

Paddy O'Dee is much more at home over fences than hurdles and looks slightly overpriced in the 18:05 handicap chase. He is worth forgiving a lesser effort over timber last time given the ease with which he won a chase over course and distance a fortnight previous, making all to score by 28 lengths. Indeed, the manner of that success seems to have been somewhat overlooked in his morning price, perhaps due to the presence of former Cheltenham Festival/Grade 1 performers Osana and Sports Line. Nevertheless, price is the deciding factor: take the value and back Paddy O'Dee.

Finally, Muirhead ought to take advantage of a good opportunity in the 18:35. A high-class hurdler, he also boasts winning form over fences in recent seasons and finished a creditable sixth in the Galway Plate on his return to action at the start of August. Shaking off the cobwebs after a nine-month absence, the Flemensfirth gelding should be spot on for what is an easier task this evening, and it will be disappointing if he can't get his head in front.
