The Grade 1 Jn Wine Chase (14:30), featuring a clash between Sizing Europe and First Lieutenant, is the highlight on the card and Henry de Bromhead's admirable veteran, Sizing Europe, narrowly gets the vote. Sizing Europe looked as good as ever last season, despite his advancing years, and he has only found Finian's Rainbow and the imperious Sprinter Sacre too strong since he was agonisingly defeated in this race in 2011. Sizing Europe limbered up for this race with a comfortable win at Gowran Park and he looks sure to launch a bold bid as he bids for a first success over three miles.
Paul Nicholls has enjoyed some successful forays to Down Royal in recent years and he looks to have strong claims of landing a sixth successive win in the Powers Irish Whiskey Chase (15:05) through Rolling Aces. Rolling Aces quickly developed into a smart chaser last term, winning an ultra-competitive handicap at Newbury, and he was impressive at Wincanton before running a cracking race when runner-up in the Racing Plus Chase at Kempton on his final start of the campaign. The suspicion is that Rolling Aces has plenty more to offer - he has only made eight career starts - and he can enhance his trainer's excellent record in this contest.
In the following race (15:40), we will side with the Gordon Elliott-trained Emperor Concerto. Emperor Concerto hasn't been with Elliott for long but he has shaped well on two of his three starts for his new yard, including when finishing fourth at Sligo last time, and could yet cash in on this reduced mark. Emperor Concerto arguably did a bit too much too soon at Sligo and a less forceful ride can see him return to the winners' enclosure
