It is day three of Killarney's May meeting and Timeform's Irish team have picked out three more SmartPlays.....
"Lucciola looks the one they all have to beat in the first Flat race of the evening at 19:00..."
Racing opens today with a really interesting novice chase featuring some useful recruits. Caolaneoin has long appealed as the type to do better over fences than hurdles and he can make a winning debut over the larger obstacles. He had his limitations exposed in Graded novices over hurdles last season after winning a maiden at Fairyhouse in January, but he still represents some strong form lines and the drop back down in trip will suit this strong traveller.
In The Haven is clearly no world beater, without a win since December 2008, but he won't get many better chances to get off the mark over fences than the one he is faced with in the handicap chase at 18:00. He was left with a bit too much ground to make up at Cork last time after a slight mistake two out, but kept on well to pull clear of the remainder in the race won by Ransom (Torremuelle fourth). He has had problems with his jumping in the past but these fences aren't the stiffest and the sounder underfoot conditions will be in his favour.
Lucciola looks the one they all have to beat in the first Flat race of the evening at 19:00. This very well-bred daughter of Verglas (comes from family of Hard Top, Spectrum and Petrushka) was betrayed by greenness on her debut at Dundalk but stepped up markedly on that form when just denied by the promising Strada Colorato at Naas last time. There is more to come from Paul Deegan's filly and she should prove too good for the likes of Van Rooney and Hes Our Music.
