Timeform Irish SmartPlays: Clonard the Lad at Naas

Ruby Walsh can win on Clonard Lad

Timeform have found three bets for you at Naas...

Clonard Lad showed that he retained plenty of ability when finishing runner-up and, encouragingly, he backed up that effort when finishing in the same spot at Punchestown last month...

The beginners' chase at 14:00 is an interesting contest and it could be worth siding with You Must Know Me who has already achieved a useful level of form and sets a decent standard for the chasing newcomers to aim at. Like many from the De Bromhead yard, You Must Know Me impressed with his fencing technique, jumping well in the main as he finished runner-up to Dedigout in a Grade 3 here. He simply failed to stay the marathon distance in the Irish National, while a subsequent effort over hurdles can be ignored as he probably found the run coming too soon, and he holds strong claims on his return from a break.

Clonard Lad won a bumper in 2010 but, after making his hurdling debut in the same year, was absent for over three years before making his return at Listowel in September. Clonard Lad showed that he retained plenty of ability when finishing runner-up and, encouragingly, he backed up that effort when finishing in the same spot at Punchestown last month. He shaped extremely well at Punchestown, travelling strongly, and the form he displayed there sets a clear standard in the 14:35 at Naas. He should prove difficult to beat.

JP McManus holds a strong hand in the penultimate race on the card, the two-and-a-half mile handicap chase at 15:40, and Classic Event can help his owner to pay off some of the expensive Towcester bar bill. Classic Event doesn't have many miles on the clock but he did show some ability over hurdles and stepped up on his chase debut when finishing third at Tramore last month. Classic Event was set to produce an even better effort when falling at the last at Wexford (disputing second at the time) and may still be open to a bit of improvement in this sphere.
