Timeform Irish SmartPlays: Silver Concorde to fly home at Galway

Dermot Weld's Silver Concorde looks sure to go close in the finale.

The Galway Festival gets underway this evening, and the Timeform Irish team highlight three selections to kick-off what looks sure to be a busy week...

Silver Concorde is expected to leave that form well behind tonight and it will be a surprise if he doesn’t add to his trainer’s monumental record at this meeting...

The second race on the card, 16:30, looks a very competitive handicap hurdle with a number holding chances, but the Noel Meade-trained Maxim Gorky looks to hold solid claims of following up his recent victory this evening. A useful sort on the Flat, Maxim Gorky has shown fairly useful form over hurdles and improved when landing a large-field maiden at Gowran last month. This will be his first outing in handicap company over timber, but he looks on a favourable mark and a bold bid looks likely.

Our next selection is in the 18:40 and, whilst it is not usually advisable to take on many of Dermot Weld's horses at Galway, Moldowney looks capable of upsetting the applecart somewhat, and is taken to get the better of likely favourite Encrypted Message. Moldowney got off the mark at the third time of asking when landing a maiden at Dundalk in May and was then thrown in at the deep end in a hot-looking handicap at Royal Ascot in June, shaping well when sixth to Fennel Bay having been left plenty to do. The stiff finish at Galway looks sure to suit and he is open to further progress.

Having taken on one of Dermot Weld's yard in the previous race, we should aim to restore some balance to proceedings and Silver Concorde looks sure to go very close in the concluding bumper at 19:10. Silver Concorde has only had one previous outing and arrived at Leopardstown for his debut in January with a very tall reputation. Sent off odds-on, it could be argued that was a disappointing effort, though there was plenty of encouragement to be taken as he was caught on heels early in the straight and very green under pressure before finishing well for hands-and-heels. Silver Concorde is expected to leave that form well behind tonight and it will be a surprise if he doesn't add to his trainer's monumental record at this meeting.
