Today's Horse Racing Tips: Raffles can steal the race from the front at HQ

Alan Dudman is backing three horses at Newmarket on Friday

Alan Dudman looks at the Newmarket card for Friday and has three selections to follow at headquarters...

"Stamford Raffles is a quirky sort who likes to boss small fields, so we have the possibility of him leading, and there will be plenty of leeway to trade from his big price if he does."

Make a date with Hannon's Wedding

14:45 Newmarket - Back Wedding Date @ BSP

Richard Hannon's Wedding Date looks a decent bet for the fillies' sprint at 14:45, and I can see her running a big race at around the 6.05/1 mark.

She's a bit better than the grade she'll face on Friday, which is why she looks bet material. The fact the handicapper has dropped her another 3lb down to 83 makes her well treated too. There's also the added bonus of the 5lb claim of apprentice Thore Hammer Hansen.

Wedding Date likes quick ground and loves to run from off a fast pace as she usually finishes off well. A fine comeback at Windsor recently should put her spot on for this.

For a filly that won a 0-105 at York last term, this should be a bit easier.

Back two outsiders for Newmarket finale

16:50 Newmarket - Back Stamford Raffles and Thaqaffa @ BSP

There's a chance that the William Haggas-trained Shauyra could be overbet for this, and was priced up at 2/1 on the Sportsbook last night. But she was beaten by Glan Y Gors last time, and that isn't exactly top form.

That's why I am happy to play a couple in the same race at bigger odds, as Thaqaffa and Stamford Raffles were up at 16/1 and 14/1 when the race was priced up yesterday. Those odds were too big initially as both would have claims, so it was no surprise to see Raffles cut into 15/2. Both can be a bit tricky, so it could be worth using In-Play trading to get some of your money back.

Thaqaffa loves quick ground but didn't quite stay over 1m6f at Yarmouth last time, but he travelled well and should strip fitter as that was his first run since November.

Stamford Raffles is a quirky sort who likes to boss small fields, so we have the possibility of him leading, and there will be plenty of leeway to trade from his big price if he does.

He's down to a winnable mark of 82 and won a race at Newmarket last season when he absolutely tanked through it.

He does stay further too. Hopefully he'll find enough in a battle.
