Timeform on Valyrian Steel

Dakota Gold - 13:00 York

Dakota Gold was one of the stars of last season, rapidly rising through the handicap ranks, winning five times. He has not proved so prolific this term, but he has shown a similar level of form, looking as good as ever when winning the Beverley Bullet in trademark style, finding plenty under pressure after dominating from the start. He followed that up with a fine second here and wasn't disgraced when third last time at Doncaster, a course which doesn't seem ideal for his front-running style. A return to York and an easy surface can enable him to bounce back.

Dubai Honour - 13:30 York

The William Haggas-trained Dubai Honour was an unlucky loser when narrowly touched off at Chester on his second outing, finishing well after having to wait for a gap entering the straight. He took another step forward at Haydock last time, gaining a measure of compensation with a smooth two-and-a-half-length success, and he looks to have been handed a fair opening mark for his nursery debut. He is a lightly-raced, progressive colt from an excellent yard, so he has plenty to recommend him.

Valyrian Steel - 16:55 York

Valyrian Steel - a €600,000 purchase as a yearling - did well to make a winning debut at Newcastle in June, keeping on well from further back than ideal after showing early signs of inexperience. Valyrian Steel still looked rough around the edges when returning at Beverley last month, but he justified a short price to defy a penalty with more in hand than the winning margin of a length and a quarter would suggest. He has the potential to do much better and could be a cut above the rivals he meets on his handicap debut.
