Timeform on Poderoso
Firenze Rosa was out of form for most of last season, but she ran a blinder, producing her best effort since 2019 when only just touched off on her return at Windsor last week from 8 lb out of the handicap. The first two home that day had the race between them from some way out, and she won't need to build on that performance to go one place better now back on her correct mark.
An interesting juvenile event where Poderoso makes most appeal following his encouraging debut effort at Newbury. He was an expensive purchase as a yearling - 225,000 guineas - and is bred to be sharp, so it was good to see him go very close in a race that is working out well. He travelled fluently throughout and still held every chance inside the final furlong before his inexperience surfaced. There should be plenty more to come from him and another big run is on the cards.
This doesn't look the strongest race of its type and it looks cherry-ripe for Gustav Holst who has run to a similar level on both of his starts. He was beaten only by a potentially smart type on debut at Leicester and still didn't look the finished article when finishing third at Salisbury 10 days ago, hanging right under pressure. There should be plenty more to come from him and this looks an easier assignment.
