Hexham Placepot: Tuesday March 24

Hexham is the venue for today's Placepot attempt
Hexham is the venue for today's Placepot attempt

An interesting card at Hexham is the venue for today's crack at the Placepot...

"Paul Stafford doesn't send many horses over from Ireland to Hexham, but has an excellent record when he does..."

14:30 - Off to a gentle start in the first leg of today's Placepot which looks a match between the two at the head of the market Cyrus Darius and Captain Hox. The odds-on Cyrus Darius looks the pick of the two after his impressive Newcastle success last time out and he is impossible to see out of the places here.

15:00 - Interesting that Phillip Hobbs has chosen to send Onenightinvienna for a rare Hexham jaunt in this novices' hurdle. The form from his second at Chepstow last time out is streets clear of the majority of the field, and the fact he gets a stone from his most likely challenger Kingswell Theatre means he is fully expected to win this.

15:35 - The form of Nalim's Towcester success 12 days ago could barely have worked out better at this level, with the second, third and fifth filling the places in a similar race at the same venue yesterday. Nalim is a far from straight-forward ride though and often races lazily throughout, so Jonathan England will need to be at his best again today to guide him home under a 7lb penalty. Flaming Thistle comes here with a chance after running a career best for his relatively new yard when finishing second over C&D 12 days ago. He comes here off just a 1lb higher and if in the same mood again has every chance of placing.

16:10 - Hard to split a few nearer the top of the market in this contest but the large amounts of money around overnight for Frankie's Promise cannot be ignored based on his wide-margin success over two miles last season in his only other visit to this track. He has been let down by his jumping since in some hot looking races but the return to this track on better ground in an easier race could see him be much more competitive. Hard to leave out Cruachan for place purposes either seeing as he won over C&D off this mark last summer and shaped with promise on his return at Kelso last time out.

16:45 - Paul Stafford doesn't send many horses over from Ireland to Hexham, but has an excellent record when he does and this makes Better B Quick a much more interesting contender than his bare form suggests. Marlee Mourinho is not without a chance either if repeating his Newcastle second behind a subsequent winner two starts ago. A mistake last time put an end to his effort in a much more competitive race than this and the addition of cheek pieces is of interest if helping him to focus on his fencing.

17:15 - Very little to go by as usual in such a race but the safe option for a place looks to be Ten Trees who was third in a bumper at Catterick last time after a disappointing fourth on debut (well backed with McCoy booked).
