Through the Card: Hamilton, Friday 19 July

18:00 - The recent form of a couple in this handicap tie in with each other and it looks worth focusing on that. Iconic Code and SET IN STONE (1) finished second and third respectively in a C&D handicap last Saturday but those placings can be reversed here. Set In Stone was forced to switch at a crucial stage in the race last time and was only beaten a nose by Iconic Code at the line, with a better run through offering strong suspicion she could reverse that form.

18:35 - Byline sets a fair standard in this minor event and is open to improvement but it won't need to take anything special from a newcomer to win this. DARK REGARD (4) is a filly hailing from a leading yard in Mark Johnston, who has won two of the past nine renewals, and would only have to show a fairly useful level of ability to take a leading hand. By Dark Angel and out of a six furlong two-year-old winner, she is bred to be sharp and is the selection here.

19:05 - With most the field having something to prove in one way or another, this can be left to HOLMESWOOD (3) and Venturous to fight it out. Preference is for the former, who shaped encouragingly last Saturday at York having his first run back from a wind operation, showing no ill-effects when travelling through the race strongly. He is well below his last winning mark and his turn must be here. Venturous ran well last time but arguably should have been closer, or even won, when having to weave through the field and running on late. He needs a strong pace to be seen to the best of his ability and isn't guaranteed to get that here.

19:40 - The Scottish Stewards' Cup is up next and it is an open event with some useful types contesting. LAUGH A MINUTE (1) drops into a handicap for the first time in his career and should get a good pace to chase, which suits this strong travelling sort. YOUSINI (11) was last seen at York in mid-June and ran well on what turned out to be the unflavoured side that day. He shaped as if he has a race in him off this mark and the stiffer six furlongs here will suit him as he does he best work at the finish.

20:10 - PERSIAN MOON (5) ran his best race of the year when finishing fourth in the King George V Handicap at Royal Ascot two starts ago, running the best of those up with the pace. He was running respectably in listed events at the start of his three-year-old career and he can bounce to back to show he's capable of holding his own at that level after not going quick enough for himself last time at Ascot.

20:45 - KING AND QUEEN (10) looked a class above what his mark suggested when bolting up last Saturday over C&D. He got raised 14 lb for that success and runs here off a penalty, leaving him eight lbs well-in. He settled the race with ease last time, always travelling strongly before being eased down to win by seven lengths and is extremely hard to get away from here on what could be a very good evening for his trainer.

21:15 - A tricky contest to end the card and DANCING RAVE (5) looks set to take the finale. She was taken off her feet dropped to five furlongs last time and the step up to six furlongs and the forecast softer ground playing is set to play to her strengths. Fairy Stories is yet to record success on turf but she's shown no reason why she doesn't act on it and is worthy of a mention.
