Back
Promissory - 14:25 Newmarket
Promissory stands out a mile on profile, a well-bred sort who has improved in chunks on each run since her debut, losing little in defeat when beaten only by Sir Ron Priestley - who has since gone on to finish second to Logician in the St Leger at Doncaster - in a Group 3 at Goodwood last time, so she's a confident choice to land this now back against her own sex with further progress on the cards. Shailene is the solid alternative and another creditable effort can be expected from Spirit of Appin.
Lay
Daahyeh - 15:00 Newmarket
It is easy to see why Daahyeh is a short price for this, given she has got the best form in the book and hasn't really done anything wrong in defeat the last twice. However, she meets some fillies here who are perhaps open to more improvement than her, and it is for that reason why a lay bet looks the right play. Admittedly, the bubble burst with Cloak of Spirits at Doncaster last time, but she is well worth another chance to confirm the promise of her debut run, while Festival Day is open to significant improvement following her win last time.
Smart Stat
Maqsad - 13:50 Newmarket
3 - William Haggas's number of winners in past 9 runnings
William Haggas has done well in this race over the years and Maqsad look the ideal type to enhance it further. She looked like going right to the top earlier this season, winning a good-looking minor event over C&D before blowing away her rivals back here in a listed contest over a mile and a quarter. Connections were right to have a go at the Oaks but she failed to stay the longer distance, and looked amiss when held at Goodwood last time. The drop back to a mile, return to this venue and drop in class are all expected to she this talented filly resume winning ways.
