Recommended Bets

Lay Ventura Castle @ 1.9420/21 in the 14:10 at Lingfield

Back Stepping Ahead @ 5.39/2 in the 16:00 Pontefract

Back Pleasant Company @ 3.02/1 in the 16:25 Fairyhouse

We start with our lay of the day in the 14:10 1m2f Selling Stakes at Lingfield. The Richard Hannon-trained Ventura Castle has been a morning drifter from a low of 1.645/8 out to a current price of 1.9420/21. This three-year-old son of Paco Boy has had one run this season so far after a winless two-year-old campaign. He finished third out of four that day at Chelmsford after being sent off at a Betfair Starting Price of 1.738/11 and was soundly beaten before they even turned for home. According to the betting, Moon Arc will give layers the best chance of getting the favourite beat. He finished second on his latest start so there is hopefully some improvement to come. With layers out to get Ventura Castle in the opener at Lingfield we will join the party with a lay bet at 1.9420/21.

Moving onto our first back of the day in the 16:00 1m2f Handicap at Pontefract. After finishing second in this race last year off a 5lbs higher mark, Stepping Ahead has been backed from a high of 9.417/2 in to a current price of 5.39/2. This five-year-old gelding loves the beginning of the season, nearly always producing his best runs in the spring. Touching on his mark again, not only is he well in on last year's mark of 94, but he is also on the exact same mark of his last victory at the end of 2013. This is a competitive race, but we will Follow The Money on Stepping Ahead and back at 5.39/2.

We now head over the Irish Sea to Fairyhouse for the 16:25 3m Novice Handicap Hurdle in which we have seen a massive gamble taking place on the Willie Mullins-trained and Ruby Walsh-ridden Pleasant Company. This lightly raced seven-year-old is having his first start for Mullins and has duly been backed from a high of 7.26/1 in to a current price of 3.02/1. Formerly with David Pipe this gelding is a point-to-point winner over three miles and won on debut in a two-mile bumper at Ascot in November 2013. Since then he had three spins over hurdles in a Maiden and two novices, well beaten all three times. He has been allocated a mark of 120 for today's handicap debut and there seems to be a notion that it's far too low. With the connections involved and the money that has been put down, we suggest a back bet.
