It's the opening day of the Glorious Goodwood festival, and the Follow The Money team have found two to back and one to oppose from the Sussex venue...
We start the day with the opener where our first selection is one of a trio of horses running in the 14:00 Handicap for trainer Mark Johnston who looks to make it five wins from the last 10 renewals of this race. He's running last year's winner Sennockian Star, Fire Fighting and our selection Zand. Having traded as high as 14.3 he's now available at 11.521/2 and currently sits joint-second-favourite in our market. Trained in Switzerland in recent years, winning four times on the continent last year, including under Joe Fanning. He will look to impress on his debut for a yard with a good record in this race.
Our lay-of-the-day runs in the 14:35 Group 2. Richard Fahey's Birchwood has been drifting this morning, opening at 3.02/1 he's now available at 4.84/1. The market has been moving for Strong Challenge who is now favourite. With question marks over the ground, facing softer than he has previously after running a poor third from four at Naas last month on Good to Soft perhaps the most telling reason for the drift on the original favourite.
Our next selection runs in the 15:10 Group 2. Ascription has been gaining support this morning backed in from 14.4 to 9.417/2. This Hugo Palmer-trained gelding has won here before over a mile (grp3) and although he's up in grade here (Grp2) the ground looks like it's coming perfectly for him, and with the in form trainer (6/12) saying "he's in fantastic form" it's no wonder that there's no end of support for him at those prices. Toormore and Dutch Connection are on the drift which only further cements his place in our thoughts.
Back Zand @ 11.5 in the 14:00 Goodwood
Lay Birchwood @ 4.8 in the 14:35 Goodwood
Back Ascription @ 9.4 in the 15:10 Goodwood
