Today's Follow The Money Selection comes from the meetings at Thurles and Towcester.
We get started early with a lay in the 13:00 at Thurles, an intriguing maiden hurdle featuring two strongly backed Gigginstown prospects. Rather than split the pair, a lay on the Willie Mullins-trained Champagne Fever at 2.588/5 is recommended. He is a high-class chaser, rated at 162, but he was disappointing on both his last two starts. He went off favourite in both races but could only manage a fourth and a fifth in both. It's been 19 months since his last run and while it is expected that he will go well fresh, it is also expected that today's challenge will be very strong. Wounded Warrior is the primary opposition. He has ran consistently well at a high-level and this time out is looking to go one better than his second to Don Cossack here last January. Champagne Fever's former stable mate Roi Des Francs poses more questions and could also return to form under new trainer Gordon Elliott. He has walked out in the market from an opening 2.3611/8, which was never a realistic price considering the calibre of opposition and the time off the course.
Our each-way selection runs five minutes later in the 13:05 at Towcester where the Caroline Bailey-trained Elkstone has been well supported, backed from 7.26/1 in to 4.94/1. He ran well and showed plenty of chasing form before eventually falling in Huntingdon last time out. The step back in trip to two miles will suit the five-year-old and it's hoped his fall won't have a negative effect. Given a positive ride by Adam Pogson, Elkstone can come out on top today and looks an each way-bet to nothing
Our back selection runs in the 15:45 at Towcester, a 1m5f National Hunt Flat Race. Preference is for the Brian Ellison-trained Scottsdale, who has been well supported. Early offers of 4.1 have long gone and now he trades around the 2.829/5 mark. He was well supported a fortnight ago, when fourth of 15 at Huntingdon and looks better placed to take this race today. Kaine Wood is booked for the ride, he has ridden a few bumper winners lately so a good ride with a 7lb claim is the hope. The threat today comes from Nick Williams' Dentley De Mee, who managed a dead-heat win in a similar race at Huntingdon just over a month ago.
